MP3, WAV or trackouts: which files do you need?

MP3, WAV and trackouts describe different ways of receiving an instrumental. They do not, on their own, tell you how many streams or releases a license permits. Always read the agreement for the specific beat and ask about any term that is unclear.

An MP3 is a compressed stereo file. It is convenient for writing, sharing a demo and testing an idea without moving large files around. A WAV is an uncompressed stereo file and is generally the better source for a final vocal session when that format is included in your agreement. Converting an MP3 to WAV does not restore information removed during compression.

Trackouts provide separate exported parts of the instrumental, such as drums, bass and melody. The exact grouping varies by producer, so confirm what is included. Separate parts let an engineer adjust the balance around your vocal, create drops or remove an element from a section. They require more session organisation than a single stereo file.

Choose based on your workflow. For writing, a preview may be enough to start. For recording and mixing a release, discuss the available WAV or trackout options with your engineer. At HIGHMDB, the displayed license structure remains a preview until final agreements and delivery files are ready.
